Rug Pads: Learn which is best for you
Before making a decision on a rug pad, ask yourself what the purpose of the pad is. You should have a few reasons. First, to protect the rug that it will be under. Second, the rug pad should provide a non slip feature for rugs that tend to slide. Third, the rug pad should add some comfort. Lastly, the rug pad can reduce noise.
You should care about the effects a rug pad can have on your rugs and your floors. Many rug pads have been known to damage hardwood floors so be careful of these. It is best to avoid the very thin non slip rug pads in the mass marketed stores. These are usually imported and made of various materials. Two problems with these rug pads is that the non slip effect wears off in a short time and the grid like design of the pad could stick and mark the floor. This is a very inexpensive pad and it shows.
A quality non slip pad could be an organic polymer pad with natural oils or a solid rubber backed pad. By solid rubber, I do not mean some of the rubber like pads out there. There are plenty of less expensive pads claiming to be rubber, or latex, and this is merely a sprayed on application that does not last. This is another cause of damage to hardwood floors.
If your rug slips, then a good quality non slip pad for you is either an organic polymer non slip pad, a solid rubber non slip pad or a jute and rubber combination pad. In the case of the pads with rubber, again, be sure they are solid, natural rubber. A popular pad today is the jute/rubber combination. This is a very good pad yet there are lots of these types made with a sprayed on latex. To avoid disappointment, be sure you chose one that has a layer of real rubber sewn on to the jute surface of the pad.
For rugs that do not tend to slide, a nice recycled jute pad is excellent. There are several qualities of this pad and I will make your search easy. Choose one that is 40 ounce weight or close to it. The 40 ounce dense jute rug pads are perfect for many reason. They protect the rug, protect the floor, do not smell, are mold and mildew resistant and do not shed. Jute rug pads of a lesser weight count may shred and not last as long as a dense 40 ounce jute pad. This type of pad is perfect for room size rugs and the extra cushion it provides is a nice feature, almost 1/2 of an inch thickness.
