Never Hit

It's not the “top Hits” We’ve Forgotten From the Past

I want to talk a little about forgotten music. Just recently I came across some Top 40’s Radio Surveys and was reminded of songs that simply got me excited. I have been trying the last few years to collect songs from my past. I was a teen in the 70’s and I simply think that the late 60’s and 70’s were the best times for music, at least pop music in modern history. The ideas were so fresh, and the artist were so creative. Today, many artists become popular because the promoters simply promote them to fame, and so much of the music either sounds the same or is some remake of the old stuff. There was just so much diversification back then. Even on the pop charts, you might hear “Ina-Godda-davida” by Iron Butterfly back to back with “Candy Man” by Sammy Davis Jr. WOW, That’s just messed up isn’t it? But what fun it was listening to the songs. I can remember taking a trip with my family when I was about 11 years old, and keeping track of how many songs were played in a row that I liked. Unless I can find a good oldies channel today the best I might do is get two in a row I like, and that is on a good day.

The problem with the most of the oldies channels today is that they only play the very top hits of the charts. What about all the others? There is a channel that came out a few years ago in my area called “THE RIDE” and they do play a lot of different music. I enjoy it much of the time. But they limit themselves to mostly the older rock. Hey, I’m not complaining, I love it. They filled a great void. But I am still missing all those old pop songs that were not top hits on the chart. What about the song that hit the top 40 charts at 38, and slowly moved up to 24, and them slip back into obscurity? I can’t say for sure I miss them, because many of them I can’t even remember at all. They’re gone. My wife heard one a while back, and quickly called me and told me about it. It was: The Israelites by Desmond Dekker, one of the few artist to make the charts from Jamaica. Oh man that was fun to hear. I listened to it over and over when we finally got it. It was purely by chance that I got to hear it again, because I had totally forgotten about it.

My wife for a long time had been trying to find a song that she could just barely remember. I was a very fast song that just said a lot of information very quickly. We tried looking up every thing we could think of, but just couldn’t get it. The song “video killed the radio star” kept popping up, but that was the wrong song. With the right resources we finally found it. The right name is “Life is a rock” by Reunion. My wife was very happy to finally find it. Are you starting to think back to the not so top hits yet. I am sure you remember the Guess Who very well, but do you remember the small hit they had with “Albert Flasher”? It was really cool to find that one and hear it again. You can actually get a lot of those songs from Amazon for just 99 cents per download, but can you remember the names of all of them? How many of the not so top hits are gone from your mind like they were mine?

There is hope out there. And it is easy to get your hands on too. Do you remember the Top Hits Radio Surveys from back in the 60’s and 70’s? They were top 40’s or top 30’s, and they listed the top hits of the day, as well as the artists. What if you could get you hands on some of them and just go down the hits chart and start remembering? Well you can. There is about 200 of them on a simple CD from 1971 to 1974. Once you remember the names of all the old songs, you simply have to start looking for them from Amazon or what ever your source might be. Not only do the top hits surveys show you the top hits, but some mention the top albums, and they have photos of DJ’s, and some great old ads from that era. All in all, you will have a lot of fun reminiscing. I have more information about them at: www.70stophits.com

I hope you get the chance to remember some of the ones you once loved, that just slipped away.

When Keller gets the call to make a hit on a man in Iowa, he's tempted to pass. So far he's been lucky in his chosen profession, and he's got enough stashed away to retire. Just one more, he thinks. But he quickly finds that this job might not just mark the end of his career - it could be the end of him, period. After three days in a motel room he realises he was never meant to make the hit - he was just supposed to take the fall when a prominent politician was gunned down by someone else. Suddenly he's on the run, all the evidence pointing the cops his way and literally nowhere to go.

The New York Times bestselling author and master of the modern mystery returns with a fierce and poignant new novel featuring his acclaimed killer-for-hire, Keller John Keller is everyone's favorite hit man: a new kind of hero for a new, uncertain age. He's cool. Reliable. A real pro: the hit man's hit man. The inconvenient wife, the aging sports star, the business partner, the retiree with a substantial legacy. He's taken care of them all, quietly and efficiently. Keller's got a code of honor, though he'd never call it that. And he keeps the job strictly business. "What happens is you wind up thinking of each subject not as a person to be killed but as a problem to be solved. Now there are guys doing this who cope with it by making it personal. They find a reason to hate the guy they have to kill. I don't know what's a sin and what isn't, or if one person deserves to go on living and another deserves to have his life ended. Sometimes I think about stuff like that, but as far as working it all out in my mind, well, I never seem to get anywhere." But while Keller might be a pragmatic and crack assassin, he's also prone to doubts and loneliness just like everybody else. There was a psychotherapist once. A dog. Even a woman. And though he's got Dot, his wisecracking contact and sometimes confidante, and his precious stamp collection, these days, it doesn't seem to be enough. Keller's been at this business a long while. Just maybe it's time to pack it in and find a nice little house in the desert. Only problem is, retirement takes money. And to get money, he's got to go to work. . . . Hit Parade , the third novel featuring the fascinating Keller, displays the hallmarks that distinguish Lawrence Block's award-winning fiction: the intelligence, the clever plotting, the humor, the tricky twists and ironic turns, the darkness and emotional complexity -- and, above all else, the humanity.

In 1997, amid Aerosmith's sold-out world tour and number one album release, word about Joey's troubles was reported in the press.Despite the advice he had received to play it down, Joey revealed in an interview his ongoing struggles with depression. The response from fans and people battling those same internal demons was overwhelming. Joey—who has been the drummer in Aerosmith since it was founded in 1970 and is the first member of the band to release his own book—now tells the complete story: the early days of the band, glamorous drug-addled events leading up to their eventual sobriety, battles within his family and among bandmates, and the explosive internal dynamics in Aerosmith that continue to unleash a fury of endless creativity. This is not just another rock 'n' roll memoir. In addition to the never-before-told Aerosmith war stories that abound in the book, Hit Hard unpacks the history of a rock star who was both fragile and tough, who after years of insane wildness became willing to accept help and finally kick a serious alcohol and drug addiction, only to find that the real terrors and hard work were still ahead. It's the story of an average kid from an average American suburb who went through physical and emotional trauma. It's about years of depression and the nervous breakdown at the height of the band's comeback success. Ultimately, Hit Hard is about how Joey recognized his confusion between love and abuse, awakening to the kind of self-acceptance and compassion that make relationships possible in the "real world" as a member of the biggest band in American history.

What if, under the PATRIOT Act, federal bureaucrats could take murder cases away from local cops—then bury those cases so they’re never investigated again? What if government agents could bug your home, your car, your place of business— your entire life —with nothing more than spoken permission from a secret panel of judges? What if the Department of Homeland Security could pull police officers off the street and hold them in cells indefinitely as material witnesses—because they’re working on “sensitive” investigations? They can . . . The PATRIOT Act and the Homeland Security Act give enormous power to our nation’s top federal law enforcement officials. They operate under the presumption that these officials are honest, diligent, and fair. But what if they’re not? In THE COLD HIT, Detective Shane Scully suspects that the regional boss of the Department of Homeland Security is thwarting a major murder investigation. But why? Robert Allen Virtue can act without oversight or accountability. There’s no way to question him; there’s no way to way to check up on him; there’s no way to find out if he’s exceeding his authority. Virtually at will, he can bug anyone he considers a threat to national security, take over criminal investigations, and jail cops. Even if he is breaking the law, there’s no way to know it. There’s nothing to rely on but his integrity. His professional commitment. His good name. Virtue. That may be a very big mistake. Shane and his partner are investigating "the Fingertip Killer,” a serial murderer preying on homeless Vietnam vets in Los Angeles. A bullet taken from one victim's skull matches the bullet that killed another man ten years earlier—an unexpected ballistics match linking one unsolved case to another that police call a “cold hit.” When the earlier victim turns out to have been an LAPD cop, the investigation becomes very personal for Shane. But there’s a problem: Robert Allen Virtue wants him taken off it. To solve the cop’s murder, and possibly the Fingertip case, Scully must go behind the powerful bureaucrat’s back and deep undercover—where he will begin unraveling a deadly far-reaching conspiracy that threatens to destroy everything he loves: his career, his freedom, and his family.

The average pitcher has about a .000645 chance of throwing a no-hitter. In the spring of 1938, Cincinnati Reds rookie pitcher Johnny Vander Meer pitched two, back-to-back. The feat has never been duplicated, which comes as no surprise to sports professionals and aficionados alike. Decade after decade, in one poll after another (from Sport magazine, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN),Vander Meer’s consecutive no-hitters turn up as one of baseball’s greatest and most untouchable achievements. Double No-Hit offers an inning-by-inning account of that historic second consecutive no-hitter accomplished during the first night game in New York City, with the Cincinnati Reds facing the Brooklyn Dodgers in Ebbets Field. James W. Johnson sets the stage and assembles the colorful cast of characters. Highlighting the story with recollections and observations from owners, managers, and players past and present, he fills in the details of Vander Meer’s accomplishment—and his baseball career, which never lived up to expectations heightened by his sensational performance. In the end, Double No-Hit brings to life a bygone era of the national pastime and one shining spring night, June 15, 1938, when a twenty-two-year-old fireballing lefthander with lousy control pitched his way into the top tier of baseball’s record book.
