Does it Matter How You Hold Your Drum Sticks?

In a word, yes; how you hold your drum sticks can have profound implications on your ability to play and advance your skills. Many new drummers that decide to take up the instrument without formal training will just hold the drum sticks in whatever manner seems the most comfortable, but this is a significant mistake. Getting accustomed to holding your drum sticks in an ineffective manner will make it all the more difficult to learn to hold them correctly one this becomes a necessity.

The grip you employ has a direct bearing on the bounce, movement, and control you are able to employ while playing. The bounce can be vital for establishing and maintaining a steady rhythm over a prolonged period, so it is important that your grip allow for a smooth, controlled bounce. Wild and uncontrolled bounces not only disrupt your ability to maintain an even rhythm, but also sometimes results in the drummer injuring himself. The movement factor is vital to hitting different drums in an appropriate sequence to get the correct sound, but also has to be done with a minimum of physical exertion. A drummer playing with bad movement options will frequently tire himself out too quickly.

There are three types of grips that are the most popular. The Matched Grip is used in almost all types of drumming and is probably the most popular of the three as it offers excellent movement and control while still offering the leeway to get the most out of bounces. The French Grip uses the fingers much more than the wrist and though it offers excellent movement and control, it can be difficult to get a lot of power. The Traditional Grip is more popular among jazz drummers and offers great control and nuance, but movement from one drum to another is trickier. Looking up and exploring these particular grips can save you a lot of time and relearning, so it is worth the effort.
